About Lab Grown Diamonds

What Are Lab Grown Diamonds?

Lab grown diamonds are diamonds created by scientists in a controlled laboratory environment. They share the same chemical composition and optical properties as natural diamonds, making them virtually identical in appearance. The primary differences between lab grown and natural diamonds lie in their origins and rarity.

Differences Between Lab Grown and Natural Diamonds

The most significant difference between lab grown and natural diamonds is their origin and price. Lab grown diamonds are created in a lab, whereas natural diamonds are formed over many years deep within the Earth. Because natural diamonds are rare and their supply is tightly controlled by the market, they are more expensive. In contrast, lab grown diamonds can be produced without these limitations, making them more affordable.

Similarities Between Lab Grown and Natural Diamonds

Grading: Both are evaluated using the 4 Cs—cut, carat, color, and clarity.

Hardness: They have the same level of hardness, making them equally durable.

Certification: Both GIA (Gemological Institute of America) and IGI (International Gemological Institute) certify lab-grown diamonds as diamonds, with the only distinction being the label "lab grown."

Lab grown diamonds pass standard diamond testers, only highly specialized equipment can distinguish between the two.
